MakeMusic Inc. is the company behind the popular Finale music notation software family that is used by many musicians to digitally create, view, and modify pieces of music. Finale Notepad is a member of that software suite, and is absolutely free to use, as well as compatible with the formats of the more expensive Finale 2008, Finale Allego, Finale PrintMusic, and Finale Songwriter.
Finale Notepad is capable of creating basic elements of manuscripts in its intuitive interface. As a product that is suitable for the student looking for free music notation capabilities, Notepad does lack a few advanced features; for instance, Notepad has a very limited array of instruments that can be synthesized by its MIDI engine. In any case, it does support external MIDI devices, the Human Playback feature (which makes synthesized music sound more natural), fonts for music, TAB support, and various notation file formats.
